Reading Milestones by Age: What to Expect from 0 to 10
Every child develops at their own pace, but knowing general reading milestones can help you support their journey. Here's what to expect at each stage.
Ages 0-1: The Listener
- Responds to the sound of your voice reading
- Reaches for and mouths books
- Looks at pictures with interest
What helps: Read aloud daily. Board books with high-contrast images work best.
Ages 1-2: The Explorer
- Points at pictures and names objects
- Turns pages (sometimes several at once)
- Has favorite books and asks for them
What helps: Let them hold the book. Name everything they point at.
Ages 2-3: The Participant
- Fills in words in familiar stories
- Pretends to read to stuffed animals
- Recognizes their own name in print
What helps: Personalized books are incredibly powerful at this age—they recognize their name and face!
Ages 3-5: The Pre-Reader
- Recognizes some letters and sounds
- Understands that text tells the story
- Can retell a familiar story
Ages 5-7: The Beginning Reader
- Starts sounding out words
- Reads simple sentences
- Begins reading independently
Ages 7-10: The Independent Reader
- Reads chapter books
